More on dZi Involvement in Monasteries ...
At the Mira and Taksundu Monasteries in the Solu region of Nepal, we installed solar panels and rechargable batteries to provide lighting. Once the installation was operational, we eliminated the kerosene lanterns and their harmful fumes from the monasteries. This eliminated health and fire hazards from these amazing historic structures.
Another project completed was the re-roofing of a private monastery inside the Taksindu Monastery grounds. The roof was leaking and destroying the 70-year-old beautiful, Buddhist paintings. With funding, and the physical help of our trekking group, we were able to remove the old roof and replace it with a more durable metal roof. All roofing materials were hand carried by local porters over local trails 6 days to the building site.
Also at Mira and Taksindu Monasteries the foundation sponsors young monks under the age of 14. Giving assistance for food, clothing, medical needs, and education to an area now torn by Maoist conflict.
Most families send the oldest male child to the monastery for this educational opportunity. Later, as the child matures, they are able to decide if they wish to stay on at the monastery, potentially for the rest of their life, or leave to pursue a life amongst the general population. The strong connections between the Monastery and the mountain families are the cornerstones of these communities.
Our involvement with the Monasteries in Sikkim is that we place individuals to teach English to the young monks. The teaching commitment is for 3 to 6 months and is a volunteer position. We are currently looking for volunteers, please contact us regarding your possible involvement.
