Tony Lewis - Board Chairman
Tony is the Executive Director of the Donnell-Kay Foundation, a Denver based foundation focused on reforming statewide and district policies on education. He also serves on the boards of the Colorado Association of Funders; Facing History and Ourselves; Colorado Succeeds; and the Denver Scholarship Foundation. In addition to leading climbs and treks throughout the world, Tony restores old trucks, and is an active beekeeper and gardener.
John W. Byrd, PhD - Treasurer
John's PhD in Finance and M.P.P.M. in Public Policy Analysis provide valuable skills to help evaluate dZi programs. He has received several teaching awards, including the Shell Teaching Excellence Award in 1989, and the MBA Outstanding Teacher Award in 1988, 1990 and 1992. John has taught in Nepal, India, Egypt, China and France.
Sherry Dorward - Secretary
Sherry has a Master's degree in landscape architecture from the University of California at Berkeley. She won a U.S. government fellowship to work on environmental and land-use issues in the Northern Indian state of Kashmir. Since returning to the States, she has won numerous awards for her writing and landscape design work.
Kim Reynolds - Co-Founder
Kim is a professional Life Coach and founder of two programs for women: Mind Over Mountains and Chicks with Picks. Both encourage and promote personal growth and transformation; a percentage of the proceeds support local women's shelters and the dZi Foundation.
Debbie King Ford
Debbie has a degree in communications, and is a sales representative for various companies within the ski industry. She has been extremely effective as the Director of Development for the Vilar Center for the Arts in Beaver Creek, Colorado; Chairman of the Vail Valley Medical Center Family Dinner Dance; and, currently, as Director of Development and Executive Board Member for the Shaw Outreach Team. Debbie brings to the dZi table a passion and talent for marketing and fundraising.
Bill Liske
Bill works for Above the Clouds as a premier trekking and mountain guide. He has over 30 years experience and has led multiple trips in the Himalayan areas of Nepal, Ladakh and Sikkim, India, and Bhutan.
Lisa Raleigh
Lisa was elected to the dZi Foundation Advisory Board in 2006, and the BOD in 2007. Her involvement includes: a spring 2006 trip to see dZi projects, marketing consultation, and a strategic framework and direction for the dZi Volunteer program. She is co-founder of Backbone Media Public Relations, and currently an owner and Associate Publisher of Rock and Ice and TrailRunner magazines.
Advisory Board
Liz Adams
Liz joins the advisory board after many years of supporting the dZi. She has worked at the Colorado state capital, and brings a wealth of experience and contacts. Liz has traveled to the Himalayan region a few times; most recently with her daughter on a dZi volunteer trip. As as sponsor of one of the Happiness Home Sikkim girls, Liz has a direct link to the individuals we serve and our programs.
Vicki Coulter, M.D.
Vicki spent four months in Central and South America with Project Orbis. She has also donated her time and medical skills to a free clinic in a remote area of Nepal. Vicki is the lead Ophthamologist at the Ladakh, India Optical Solutions clinic. She is a Board Certified Ophthamologist, specializing in Lazar Vision Correction; Cataract and Cataract Extraction; and Intraocular Lens Implantation.
Peter Hackett, M.D.
Peter is a world-recognized authority on high altitude medicine, and a lover of the Himalaya and its people. He has climbed Everest, lived in Nepal for six years, and was instrumental in starting the Himalayan Rescue Association. He now works as the Emergency Room Director at the Telluride Medical Center, and also staffs the Altitude Research Center at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver.
Kimberly Johnson, M.D.
Kimberly is a wonderful new addition to our advisory board. She is an Emergency Room Physician at Mercy Regional Medical Center in Durango, CO. Part of her educational experience includes a fellowship from Columbia University focusing on two specific programs: transfer of traditional medicine to New York's immigrant population, and Tibetan medical practices. Kimberly has traveled to the Himalaya eight times - including an expedition to Everest in 1990, and as a medical instructor at a remote clinic in Bandipur, Nepal. She was recently a board member for the Wilderness Medical Society, and continues to teach wilderness medicine here and abroad.
Ace Kvale
As a professional photographer, Ace has an insatiable appetite for world travel. His favorite destinations - when he's not roaming the southwest canyon country - are the mountain regions of Asia, and the Himalaya. Ace generously donates photos for dZi ads, the website, brochures, and fundraising events.
Monica Schalla
An Advisory Board member since 2002, Monica's involvement started in 2000 while traveling with the dZi in Nepal. During that year, she took part in the Chulemu School remodel. She has since traveled with the dZi a number of times for various projects. She has been instrumental in the set up and implementation of the Optical Solutions Program. When not traveling with the dZi, Monica runs Schalla Jewelers in Ouray, Colorado. Her interests include running, ice climbing, and photography.
Project Directors
Ben Ayers - Nepal
Ben is the founder of the extremely effective Porters Progress Nepal. Founded in 2000, Porters Progress has created community-based programs supporting the Porter society of Nepal, through education, improvements in working conditions, provision of warm clothing and school reconstruction. Ben will work to initiate new community-based programs for the dZi Foundation in areas not currently being served.
Kelsang Phuntsok - Sikkim
Kelsang is the owner and Chief Executive of Wisdom Travels. A Tibetan orphan, Kelsang was adopted by an English couple and supported through receiving his MBA degree. Wisdom Travels is an intimate dZi Foundation partner and Kelsang personally works to oversee and direct the foundation's Sikkim programs. “Giving back to my people” is Kelsang’s stated goal, which he continues to accomplish with the dZi Foundation.
Bill Rohs – Ladakh
“Utilize skills in management, field coordination and teaching to further the lives of humanity around the world” are Bill’s objectives and direction. As a teacher, consultant and successful business owner Bill brings a wealth of experience. His most recent work in Pakistan and Indonesia, managing and coordinating large staffs while delivering supplies and programs, makes his skill set invaluable for the foundation's work.
